First day of Summer School

Today was a fantastic start to Summer School! After introductions, students enjoyed a game of Duck, Duck, Goose to get to know one another.
We then learned about the four steps of the engineering design process: identifying a goal, brainstorming ideas, building and testing a solution, and improving the design.
Working in their teams of Shimaenaga, Axolotl, Polar Bear, and Red Panda, students applied these steps to build the tallest cup tower they could, learning how different structures affect strength and stability. Team Red Panda created the winning tower at an impressive 96 cm.
After snack time, students built and decorated popsicle stick catapults before using them to knock down cup towers, exploring force, motion, and how small design changes can improve performance.
Team Axolotl scored the most points in this challenge. In the afternoon, students planned and built spaghetti towers capable of supporting three marshmallows, developing their teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills. Team Shimaenaga won the final challenge with a tower measuring 38 cm. We ended the day by reflecting on our learning and sharing our favourite activities. It was wonderful to see everyone thinking creatively, working together, and embracing each challenge with enthusiasm.
